Patriarchal Society - Notes
-Male domination was a prominent part of society, being presented in media, politics, education, church, religion, culture and in the household/ family.
-Women were oppressed and had practically no power other than what was 'feminine', they were always portrayed as happy to stay at home, particularly from the 50's to 60's.
-The idea of the 'housewife' was particularly publicised and was portrayed as desirable in women.
-This theme is explored in the film Mona Lisa Smile, the idea of a woman's job being to find a man and then to be an ornament in a life that he would create. She would be there to provide pleasure, children and to cook for the family. Whilst he was the 'head' of the household. The meaning of a woman's life was to find an 'advantageous' marriage.

Feminism-late 60's and early 70's
-women at this time were paid less than men and were highly limited in their opportunities whether in work or education.
-Domestic abuse in marriages and in the household was always classed as the fault of the woman, appearance was said to have been the fault of the woman, due to appearance.
-Then feminism began, a fight for equality.
-A negative stereotype was created towards them, portraying them as 'lesbians' etc
-Refusal to conform to societies expectations and its constraints regarding gender were seen as incredibly unattractive.
-Hollywood cinema was most commonly known for the objectification of women. This could be seen as a tool that patriarchal society promoted to control women, by promoting the ideology that safely secured male dominance and power in society.
