Survey Analysis 2
In our second survey we questioned a considerable amount less of people of whom we thought would fit into our target audience. Our questions focused more on getting their opinions on what they enjoyed seeing within the thriller genre, and what they did not, using questions such as “Are there any special effects you like in particular” and “Are there any thriller movies you have watched and disliked? Why is this?”.
By this point we had established that most of our audience was female (however re-asked this question and a select few of other questions as to get a more accurate percentage of how many male viewers to female viewers and such we will be expecting to watch our thriller). Therefore we decided to use a female protagonist as to hopefully appeal to our female audience more. This choice of ours has also broken typical conventions of thriller movies in which the protagonist is often a male (Such as in films like Se7en, The Matrix, A clockwork orange and many more). Yet it could also be argued that the protagonist role of Annabel also falls into the role of the princess, waiting to be saved from her what is hinted as abusive and controlling father, which is according to props narrative roles, which is typically a female. Not only this but as well as an Antagonist Alice could also fall into the category of princess, wanting Annabel her ‘prince’ of who she is attached to to take notice of her and save her. You could also argue that because Alice is a part of Annabels imagination she is in fact Annabel making Alice partly the Protagonist role, and Annabel herself an antagonist for creating Alice.
However we also added scenes that would appeal to the male audience according to Mulvey’s feminist theory’s which included our grown up protagonist Annabel seductively cleaning herself during the shower scene. We had also chosen to add this in to show contrast within the video, the innocent child and the not so innocent teenager she has become.
Our questionnaire continued to delve deeper into what the audience is interested in seeing in our video, one of the questions being “What is your favourite thriller hybrid?”, Comedy, Psychological and Supernatural being the top 3 outcomes. These helped us narrow down our options for sub genre and eventually choose Supernatural as it was a subject that interested us both and we decided we could do without creating a video that may appear cheesy which was the worry that appeared with comedy.
As mentioned earlier we also looked into what special effects the audience enjoyed seeing, as well as those they did not. I believe this is an important factor to the making of our video as certain special effects may not suit the thriller genre and may even look the video poorly edited (such as the wrong colour of tint being added to the video). The audience may also have ideas of certain effects they have seen in other movies we have not yet seen and be able to offer up suggestions on using them.
We also enquired into little questions such as “What do you think of a knife as a murder weapon”. This was added in as a knife is a very commonly used murder weapon which some may even consider over done. We decided that if our audience voted that the knife was over used then they were an audience that were bored of typical conventions (or just weapons) of a thriller and sticking to these would bore them and that we would have to attempt to add more twist, almost going down the route of adding another sub genre of psychological thriller. The results were swayed more towards the idea of the knife being a good one and therefore decided that using typical murder weapons and more simple plots lines would be fine if we wanted to go down that road.
Overall the Survey helped us understand what appeals to our target audience and decided the basis for our future video.
